On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed. It took 15 years of research and writing to complete Brooklyn Rumble: Mau Maus, Sand Street Angels, and the End of an Era. This book is roughly 6″x9″ and has 370 pages and includes a look at the characters in the Mau Maus and the details of a gang killing that happened in February 1959 in front of the iconic Brooklyn Paramount Theater (now Long Island University). There are many reasons for juvenile delinquency and the formation of youth gangs in New York City in the 1950s, and experts still talk about those reasons today. One of the aspects of juvenile delinquency that has always interested me is the relationship between individual gang members and their fathers. It is in my opinion that an engaged father or consistent, positive male role model is a very good prevention measure against boys’ joining gangs. Of course by no means is this a silver bullet to preventing boys from forming gangs, but just the same it is something that interests me personally.
Below is a list of 40 gang members from Manhattan and Brooklyn and their relationship with their fathers. Not all the boys had bad relationships with their Dads, but in this narrow sampling, many did. It is something I will continue to look out for as my research uncovers more data.
