Before you get to the article…
On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed. It took 15 years of research and writing to complete Brooklyn Rumble: Mau Maus, Sand Street Angels, and the End of an Era. This book is roughly 6″x9″ and has 370 pages and includes a look at the characters in the Mau Maus and the details of a gang killing that happened in February 1959 in front of the iconic Brooklyn Paramount Theater (now Long Island University). I have already posted three pages about a Brooklyn gang from Brownsville called the Roman Lords which I urge you to read:
There is another Roman Lord who gained some fame after he wrote a book chronicling his experiences in the Roman Lords and his life after the gang when he became a drug addict. His life was going nowhere as a heroin addict until he found Jesus. When he gave his life over to Jesus, he went to Bible College, became a pastor and evangelist and now leads a church in Richmond, Virginia called New Life Outreach Church. He has traveled the world preaching and evangelizing about his faith.
Victor’s daughter emailed me yesterday with some pictures of her father when he was in the Roman Lords, whose turf was in the boundaries of Powell Street (East), Stone Ave (West), Sutter Ave (North) and Livonia Ave (South). Pop’s Candy Store on the corner of Riverdale and Powell Streets was a hangout. The Roman Lords were a very active and aggressive gang and were involved in many incidents of violence with area gangs.
Victor later wrote a book about his life, including his time in the gang called Son of Evil Street. Chapters 3,4, and 5 of his book outlined his time in the Roman Lords including the rumbles and fights with rival gangs like the Liberty Boys and the Jibaros who were were north of Livonia Street. Here are a couple of pictures of Victor in his black leather jacket somewhere in Brownsville, Brooklyn, during his time in the Roman Lords.
Recently, another development has come about and Victor Torres has a movie coming out on March 24, 2017 about his life, not only in the Roman Lords, but his ensuing drug addiction and his conversion to Christianity. Starring Danny Acosta, there is a riveting trailer that can be viewed below:
