{"id":317,"date":"2012-03-21T02:20:26","date_gmt":"2012-03-21T02:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=317"},"modified":"2018-03-02T22:46:39","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T03:46:39","slug":"summary-of-specific-gang-homicides","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=317","title":{"rendered":"Summary of Specific Gang Homicides"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before you get to the article\u2026<\/p>\n<p>On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed.\u00a0 It took 15 years of research and writing to complete <em>Brooklyn Rumble: Mau Maus, Sand Street Angels, and the End of an Era.\u00a0 <\/em>This book is roughly 6\u2033x9\u2033 and has 370 pages and includes a look at the characters in the Mau Maus and the details of a gang killing that happened in February 1959 in front of the iconic Brooklyn Paramount Theater (now Long Island University).\u00a0 If you want to buy a copy, <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=2481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here and this link will take you to an online ordering page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>There were of course quite a few gang homicides during the 1950s, some of them getting a lot of publicity in the New York City media.\u00a0 Not all cases received equal attention, and it would also depend on if the defendants pled guilty or not.\u00a0 If they pled not-guilty, a trial would ensue and the case would be in the news for much longer, allowing the media to dig into the background of the defendants.\u00a0 If the defendants would plead guilty, they were sentenced and that was all that was basically reported on it (in most cases).<\/p>\n<p>I take a look at three gang homicides on this website, with some pictures to go along with it.\u00a0 For instance, there was the <a title=\"Michael Farmer Murder\" href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infamous stomping and knifing of Michael Farmer<\/a>, a boy from the Washington Heights section of Manhattan.\u00a0 His death resulted from a gang war over a pool in Highbridge Park.\u00a0 The newspapers made much of the fact Farmer was a polio victim.<\/p>\n<p>Another case that got as much attention as the Michael Farmer killing was the trial of Salvador Agron and Luis Hernandez, the &#8220;Capeman&#8221; and &#8220;Umbrellaman&#8221; respectively.\u00a0 <a title=\"Capeman Murders\" href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sal knifed and killed two boys in a Hells Kitchen park in the summer of 1959<\/a> with Hernandez doing what he could to assist in the killing by using his sharpened umbrella-tip.<\/p>\n<p>Although it is not in the exact era I am studying (1955-1959), another case that captured attention <a title=\"Fordham Baldies &amp; Red Wings\" href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was a gang war between the Fordham Baldies from the Bronx and the Red Wings from East Harlem<\/a>.\u00a0 In this case a man was killed and two teenagers severely injured.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before you get to the article\u2026 On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed.\u00a0 It took 15 years of research and writing &hellip;
