{"id":2156,"date":"2016-01-06T22:06:30","date_gmt":"2016-01-07T03:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=2156"},"modified":"2020-03-27T06:55:07","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T10:55:07","slug":"assassins-west-harlem","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=2156","title":{"rendered":"Assassins, West Harlem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There were two Assassins gangs in Manhattan during the 1950s, one in West Harlem and the other in Central Harlem.\u00a0 The two gangs didn&#8217;t associate much on account of the distance between them.\u00a0 The Assassins in Central Harlem fought the Scotchmen, also from that area &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=2051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> click here to read about that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Assassins in West Harlem were mortal enemies with the Sinners (sometimes referred to as Young Sinners) also from West Harlem.\u00a0 Their rivalry flared white hot in the summer of 1959 in a battle culminating in the death of one member of the Sinners (Milton Graniela) in a police shoot-out next to Central Park, and the killing of an Assassin (Sergio Quinones) in a drive-by shooting, all in the same day.\u00a0 After the unfolding of this tragedy, I have only come across one other reference on record to the Sinners and none on the Assassins.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t exactly a surprise though because often in extreme events like homicides, the police pressure on the neighborhood was intense and it sometimes spelled the end of that particular gang.\u00a0 Or sometimes the gang collapsed because so many of it&#8217;s members were incarcerated.\u00a0 Whatever the reason in this case, as mentioned, I wasn&#8217;t aware of any references to the Assassins from West Harlem after these killings.\u00a0 That is until I received a message the other day from a reader on this website who sent a fantastic picture taken in November 1961 of Juan Vasquez, the Vice President of the Assassins at 101st Street, the headquarters of the gang.\u00a0 This is a great picture and now we know that the Assassins survived the violent summer of &#8217;59 and lasted until at least November 1961.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2157\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?attachment_id=2157\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2157\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2157\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2157\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Juan-Vasquez-Vice-President-of-the-Assassins.-101-St-Headquarters..-Photographer-Perry-Kretz..Nov_.-1-1061.png?resize=612%2C534&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Vice President of the Assassins. 101 St Harlem.\" width=\"612\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Juan-Vasquez-Vice-President-of-the-Assassins.-101-St-Headquarters..-Photographer-Perry-Kretz..Nov_.-1-1061.png?w=612&amp;ssl=1 612w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Juan-Vasquez-Vice-President-of-the-Assassins.-101-St-Headquarters..-Photographer-Perry-Kretz..Nov_.-1-1061.png?resize=300%2C261&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vice President of the Assassins. 101 St Harlem.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed.\u00a0 It took 15 years of research and writing to complete <em>Brooklyn Rumble: Mau Maus, Sand Street Angels, and the End of an Era.\u00a0 <\/em>This book is roughly 6\u2033x9\u2033 and has 370 pages and includes a look at the characters in the Mau Maus and the details of a gang killing that happened in February 1959 in front of the iconic Brooklyn Paramount Theater (now Long Island University).\u00a0 If you want to buy a copy, <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=2481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here and this link will take you to an online ordering page<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There were two Assassins gangs in Manhattan during the 1950s, one in West Harlem and the other in Central Harlem.\u00a0 The two gangs didn&#8217;t associate much on account of the distance between them.\u00a0 The Assassins in Central Harlem fought the &hellip;
