(Police Athletic League)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before you get to the article\u2026<\/p>\n<p>On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed.\u00a0 It took 15 years of research and writing to complete <em>Brooklyn Rumble: Mau Maus, Sand Street Angels, and the End of an Era.\u00a0 <\/em>This book is roughly 6\u2033x9\u2033 and has 370 pages and includes a look at the characters in the Mau Maus and the details of a gang killing that happened in February 1959 in front of the iconic Brooklyn Paramount Theater (now Long Island University).\u00a0 If you want to buy a copy, <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=2481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here and this link will take you to an online ordering page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>Since I was about 12 years old I have been interested in collecting stamps (philatelic) for the countries of Canada and Germany.\u00a0 My collection has quite a few stamps, but the holes in my collection of missing stamps will probably never be filled because they are the most rare and expensive stamps.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t do much collecting now because the lion&#8217;s share of my free time is spent on writing and research.\u00a0 However, philately still interests me and sometimes I find myself on eBay, trawling through the stamps, covers and postcards for sale.\u00a0 In fact, I found myself doing this the other day when I found a listing that was the perfect blend for me: a stamp that had to do with my research.\u00a0 It was a cover of a letter mailed in Brooklyn in 1947.\u00a0 The stamp was cancelled with a message that says: &#8220;Baseball Combats Juvenile Delinquency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2071\" style=\"width: 1209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-front.jpg?ssl=1\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2071\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2071\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-front.jpg?resize=640%2C443&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cover front juvenile delinquency\" width=\"640\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-front.jpg?w=1199&amp;ssl=1 1199w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-front.jpg?resize=300%2C207&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cover-front.jpg?resize=1024%2C708&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Postal cover &#8220;Baseball combats juvenile delinquency&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The letter was mailed from 1 Hanson Place in Brooklyn.\u00a0 A quick look at the map shows that it is in the southern section of Fort Greene, which was an area of the city notorious for crime, juvenile delinquency and youth gangs such as the Mau Maus and Fort Greene Chaplains.\u00a0 As for the message of baseball combating juvenile delinquency, the city of New York certainly felt this way ever since 1914, when the Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) came into being.\u00a0 P.A.L. was an organization that worked with the NYPD to work in neighborhoods with high crime and give the kids constructive activities to do while showing the children that the police had their best interest at heart.\u00a0 Policemen would develop and oversee teams of youth interested in sports like baseball and provided equipment and guidance to do so.\u00a0 The time and energy the kids would have to give to the various activities would presumably keep them out of trouble.\u00a0 They also met friends, experienced what team work was about and found interests that they weren&#8217;t able to explore before.\u00a0 It was a boredom buster.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2072\" style=\"width: 1670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pal-logo-1959.jpg?ssl=1\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2072\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2072\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pal-logo-1959.jpg?resize=640%2C156&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"P.A.L.
