On February 23, 2018, my book on the Mau Maus and Sand Street Angels, who were two Brooklyn youth gangs from the 1950s, has been completed.\u00a0 It took 15 years of research and writing to complete Brooklyn Rumble: Mau Maus, Sand Street Angels, and the End of an Era.\u00a0 <\/em>This book is roughly 6\u2033x9\u2033 and has 370 pages and includes a look at the characters in the Mau Maus and the details of a gang killing that happened in February 1959 in front of the iconic Brooklyn Paramount Theater (now Long Island University).\u00a0 If you want to buy a copy, click here and this link will take you to an online ordering page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I find all sorts of interesting things in some of the files of the cases I am researching.\u00a0 Take for example what I found in 2012 on a research trip in New York City.\u00a0 Going through the records of perhaps the most infamous (or at least widely-reported) of all the gang killings during the mid to late 1950s – the killing of Michael Farmer<\/a> – I found something I had never seen before.\u00a0 Nestled in an envelope were the stenographer’s tape for the statements of the defendants in the case.\u00a0 This was the first time I had seen such a thing.\u00a0 They were long brown strips of paper with different letter combinations on them.\u00a0 These are the actual stenographer’s tape of the official statement each defendant made to the District Attorney and the police shortly after they were picked up for Farmer’s murder.<\/p>\n

\"DSC_0511\"<\/a> \"DSC_0513\"<\/a> Stenographer’s paper is now obsolete as stenographer’s machines are now paperless,\u00a0 but in the 1950s this wasn’t the case.\u00a0 The above pictures show what the tape looks like, and below is an example of a stenographer’s machine looks like.\u00a0 The curious letter combinations are how stenographer’s notes work.\u00a0 Stenographers must be able to type approximately 200 words per minute to do their job and would use different letter combinations or “theories” in writing notes.\u00a0 Some stenographer’s used different theories and sometimes mixed them, making it difficult for others to read their notes.\u00a0 The stenographer’s machine looked a little like a computer keyboard, but much smaller as can be seen below.\u00a0 The keys of stenographer machines were actually blank, but the keyboard layout is this:<\/p>\n

I was able to find some pictures of a stenographer’s machine from the 1950s (see below), but I can’t say for certain which machine was used in taking the statements of the defendants in the Michael Farmer case though.\u00a0 As far as I can tell, here is the process of how it would work, from arrest to report.\u00a0 First the police would pick up a defendant for questioning.\u00a0 If the boy would make a confession, the police would then call in the District Attorney and get the official confession down on paper with the taking of notes by the stenographer.\u00a0 Once the statement was completed, the stenographer would take the tape that you can see at the top of the page and “translate” it into full English words for the official record giving the official statement to police and DA.<\/p>\n
