{"id":1120,"date":"2013-03-28T00:09:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T04:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=1120"},"modified":"2020-10-01T06:31:39","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T10:31:39","slug":"profile-of-a-python-knight-an-east-harlem-gang","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/?page_id=1120","title":{"rendered":"Profile of a Python Knight, an East Harlem Gang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The reasons and causes\/effects of juvenile delinquency is a topic that is beyond my scope and expertise, especially since the magic bullet on preventing JD has not been reached.\u00a0 However, there are several elements that &#8220;cause&#8221; juvenile delinquency and gangs, some of which include economic deprivation, poor housing, racial strife, lack of education and little or no activities to keep youth busy.<\/p>\n<p>Family life is one that interests me greatly and almost without exception, the gangs from the 1950s that I am studying tended to have had very poor upbringing with family strife, broken homes and parents that didn&#8217;t care etc.\u00a0 I was able to obtain the family background of one boy who lived in East Harlem during the 1950s.\u00a0 He was the President of the Python Knights, a Black gang that fought it&#8217;s enemies the Noble Englishmen and the Enchanters.\u00a0 This boy had an extensive record with various arrests ranging from disorderly conduct, petite larceny and breaking and entering.\u00a0 Gang members did participate in these types of crimes and I would like to show one particular assault that was very much gang-related:\u00a0 the beating and stabbing of a rival member of a gang called the Noble Englishmen that happened on November 30, 1956.\u00a0 From there, I will show the family background of this boy, who shall be named &#8220;RC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/python-knights1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1125\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/python-knights1.jpg?resize=640%2C693&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"python knights\" width=\"640\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/python-knights1.jpg?w=928&amp;ssl=1 928w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/python-knights1.jpg?resize=277%2C300&amp;ssl=1 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">RC was born in New York City in September 1939 and was the fourth child in a family of eight children (one of his brothers died at age 34 in 1962 from a drug overdose).\u00a0 His mother became pregnant at 16, but then married another man with whom she had the other children.\u00a0 When RC was 6 years old, his father ran off with another woman, leaving the child-rearing duties to his wife who also had to work in order to provide for the family.\u00a0 His father died in 1953 from heart failure when RC was 14 years old.\u00a0 Two of RC&#8217;s older brothers had criminal records and one of his sister&#8217;s was later charged with prostitution and was suspected of being a drug user.\u00a0 Although the details and circumstances of this are unclear, the Psychiatric Clinic of the Manhattan Court warranted that RC be submitted to an examination when he was 9 years old.\u00a0 He was found to be without psychosis and estimated to be of &#8220;dull normal intelligence.&#8221;\u00a0 He was diagnosed as an inadequate type.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">RC and his brothers and sisters and Mom lived in a tenement at 1626 Park Avenue in Manhattan, a depressed area of Harlem that was rife with youth gang activity.\u00a0 With his Mom working to provide for the family and no good example from his brothers and sisters and no father to speak into his life positively, RC had nobody to control his youthful desires or mischief.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1126\" style=\"width: 1413px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?ssl=1\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1126\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1126 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?resize=640%2C312&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"1626 Park Avenue, where RC of the Python Knights gang lived.\" width=\"640\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?w=1403&amp;ssl=1 1403w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?resize=300%2C146&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?resize=1024%2C499&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?resize=500%2C244&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1626-Park-Avenue.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1626 Park Avenue, where RC of the Python Knights gang lived.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">RC attended school at PS 57 from the age of 6 to 12, completing 6th grade.\u00a0 His attendance was good and his grades were C&#8217;s and D&#8217;s.\u00a0 However, in 1951, when RC was 12 he had to be transferred to a &#8220;600&#8221; school &#8211; PS 612 &#8211; which was a school for emotionally disturbed children.\u00a0 There he was aggressive, stole from teachers and fought with teachers &#8212; when he was there.\u00a0 He had excessive truancy at PS 612 and from the years of 1951-1956 he was known to the Juvenile Aid Bureau on six occasions for pickpocketing, opening and closing taxi doors to steal items, obstructing the sidewalk by watching a dice game and stealing a pair of shoes from Gimbel&#8217;s Department store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/PS-612-report.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1128\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/PS-612-report.jpg?resize=640%2C657&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"PS 612 report on RC, President of the Python Knights\" width=\"640\" height=\"657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/PS-612-report.jpg?w=773&amp;ssl=1 773w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/PS-612-report.jpg?resize=292%2C300&amp;ssl=1 292w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On December 9, 1953, around the time his father died, RC was adjudged as being habitually truant and was placed on probation in February.\u00a0 While on probation he was caught for breaking and entering and was declared a delinquent on April 26, 1954.\u00a0 Sent to Willowbrook State School by the Children&#8217;s Court as a &#8220;mental defective&#8221; he was returned less than a month later, as he was found to be NOT mentally defective.\u00a0 While there, RC was wild, insolent, assaulted other patients, and tried to form a gang there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At some point prior to the assault on Bost in November of 1956, RC either joined or started a gang called the &#8220;Python Knights,&#8221; whose turf was in the area of his apartment.\u00a0 He was the President of the Python Knights and controlled them, telling them what to do and acting as a general instigator.\u00a0 He stabbed Bost eight times in the back, once in the shoulder and a co-attacker hit him in the mouth with a &#8220;hard object.&#8221;\u00a0 After his arrest, he was examined and this was the observation about him:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8230;&#8230;he was evasive and his statements were at variance with the facts given by his employers and family.\u00a0 Hostile and child-like in effect, he seemingly has maintained an irresponsible mode of existence, tending to seek emotional support from his peers in venting feelings of hostility engendered by a deprived childhood and the lack of a father figure with whom he could identify.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The product of a very marginal economic circumstance, he has a low self-esteem and a poorly constituted self-concept which leads him to seek ego enhancement and a feeling of social identity in aggression.\u00a0 Dull and sensitive, he lacks insight into his motivations and projects the blame for his troubles on others.\u00a0 Awaiting trial on two complaints and sentencing on a third, he regards authority figures as hostile and threatening and his partly blunted emotional affect appears to be an infantile ego defense against guilt feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>RC didn&#8217;t end up staying in the Python Knights forever of course.\u00a0 By the 1960s, gangs had disappeared from the scene, destroyed by the ravages of drug addiction.\u00a0 By 1964, RC had compiled a long list of criminal activity, see below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Criminal-History.jpg?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1134\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Criminal-History.jpg?resize=640%2C606&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Criminal History of RC of the Python Knights, Harlem gang from the 1950s\" width=\"640\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Criminal-History.jpg?w=929&amp;ssl=1 929w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Criminal-History.jpg?resize=300%2C284&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newyorkcitygangs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Criminal-History.jpg?resize=316%2C300&amp;ssl=1 316w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was in 1964 that RC was arrested for possession of drugs and he admitted to the police he had a $12-15\/day habit.\u00a0 He was interviewed and the summary didn&#8217;t sound too different from the synopsis in the 1956 report when he was arrested for his role in the felonious assault of Bost:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The defendant is a tall, heavy set individual, who relates on a superficial level.\u00a0 During the interview situation, he was evasive and indifferent&#8230;\u00a0 He appears to have little insight into his personality difficulties and frequently projects the responsibility for his troubles on others.\u00a0 Intellectually limited and with deep feelings of inadequacy, he resorted to the use of narcotics and supported his drug habit through illegal means.\u00a0 He has disregard for authority and his relationship with authority figures has always been of a hostile nature.\u00a0 His capacity for change appears questionable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>I would like to state that not all gang members&#8217; had stories like this, but I would say that many did.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what happened to RC, or if he is alive now, but his sad story shows that he didn&#8217;t have much of a chance from the very beginning and because he did not control himself, he was responsible for the near-death of Bost, who ended up staying in the hospital for 10 days and was in pain after that to the point where he could not work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The reasons and causes\/effects of juvenile delinquency is a topic that is beyond my scope and expertise, especially since the magic bullet on preventing JD has not been reached.\u00a0 However, there are several elements that &#8220;cause&#8221;
